SSL-VPN: MAC NetExtender Client on Snow Leopard Will Not Connect

Symptom: Upon trying to connect to a SonicWall SSL VPN with the NetExtender client for Mac OS X, the software immediately reports that the user is disconnected.  The log file on the client will contain the line:

FATAL: Pppd is not setuid-root and the invoking user is not root.

Problem: The latest version of Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) does not allow the setuid flag to be set on PPPD.

Solution:

  1. Open the Terminal application (Applications -> Utilites -> Terminal).
  2. Type the following command, followed by the “Enter” key:
    sudo chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd
  3. Type the user’s password when prompted, followed by the “Enter” key.
  4. Close the Terminal and try connecting again – it should work.
