ERROR: “Setup Ended with error code 1.” While Deploying Office 2010

Note:  This article applies to the deployment steps outlined in the following TechNet article: Deploy Office 2010 by using Group Policy computer startup scripts

Symptom:  Upon attempting deployment of Microsoft Office 2010 using group policy and OCT (the Office Customization Tool), the following error is logged in %LogLocation%:

%day% %time% Setup ended with error code 1.

Problem:  The %DeployServer% path specified in the startup script batch file contains spaces or is encapsulated in quotation marks.  The startup script adds arguments to the path when it kicks off the installation which do not get along with paths that are enclosed in quotation marks.

Solution:  Rename any necessary folders to ensure that there are no spaces in the path to the installation files.  Update the %DeployServer% variable in the startup script batch file accordingly.
